Mark Justin Roiland was a writer, animator, director, producer and the co-creator of Rick and Morty as well as the voice of Rick and Morty from Season 1 to Season 6.

As of October 15, 2023, he has been dismissed from the series amid charges of domestic abuse and his voice roles have been recast with soundalike actors starting with Season 7.[1][2]

Following his firing, the charges had been dismissed for insufficient evidence, but allegations of sexual assault were reported against him.[3]

Biography[]

Justin Roiland was born on February 21st, 1980 in Manteca, California. In 1985, Roiland and his family relocated to Harrow Weald, London. In 1992, he moved back to Manteca. After moving back to Manteca, he grew up on an almond orchard there with his parents and younger sister, fashion designer Amy Roiland. He is well known for being the voice of Oscar on Disney Channel's animated series Fish Hooks, Blendin Blandin on Gravity Falls, the Earl of Lemongrab on Adventure Time and Korvo on Hulu's Solar Opposites (Co-created with Mike McMahan). He is also known for the Channel 101 shorts he made in his early career, including House of Cosbys and 2 Girls 1 Cup: The Show, a sitcom adaptation of the infamous Internet meme.

  • Justin owns two dogs, with Jerry being the inspiration for Snuffles and Jerry.
  • Prior to Channel 101, he wrote an obscure comic book called Comic Sacrifice, of which at least 4 issues were published around 1998-1999. There are some references to this comic book in Rick and Morty.
  • Co-hosted The Grandma's Virginity Podcast with Ryan Ridley and Jackie Buscarino from 2010 to 2016.
  • Provided additional voice work for the Pocket Mortys game.
  • Justin wrote the humorous episode descriptions that are seen on TV listings and streaming sites; it's unknown whether this also applies to Season 7.
  • Justin has stated that he has mixed reviews with Season 5.
